IN ROME TOURS REVISED BLOG II

Vatican City tours in the news

Late on March 17th. when St Patrick's Day in Rome was in full flow, the American owner of Vatican City Tours, who occupy prime virtual real estate on Google for keyword "Vatican tours", second in rank only to the official Vatican website, was arrested for fraud. For reasons best to known to himself, he was using his website to profit from non-existent tickets offering access to St. Peter's Square on May 1st, when the beatification of late Pope John Paul II will take place. His price per "ticket" was £150. In fact, the event is open to everyone and it is free.

The owner was also charged for running a cash rich unlicensed tour agency in Rome. Whether or not he did keep 21 firearms, 15 computers and 11 USB keys in his apartment remains to be seen, perhaps we'll never know. For now, rumours abound that three other unlicensed tour agencies with websites on Google page #1 for "Vatican tours" will be investigated by the same e-crime team which closed in on Vatican City Tours.

Vatican City Tours are also Limo Services EU and Italian Services Biz too, so all things being equal, these partner websites will be wound up in due course and removed from the internet.

Vatican City Tours as of March 20th, 2011:

"If you are the owner of this web site you have not uploaded (or incorrectly uploaded) your web site. For information on uploading your web site using FTP client software or web design software, click here for FTP Upload Information."

All of the above means that the website has been pulled offline permanently for fraudulent activities. More to follow in the business of "Vatican tours" provided by unlicensed tour agencies, no doubt.

Always use Google to check the name and reputation of your Vatican tours provider before paying online.

In Rome Tours SRL, Tour Operator license 7339 granted by Provincia di Roma on 19/10/2010.

Public transport in Rome

When the public transport workers of Rome decide to go on strike, they don't hold back. Rome grinds to a halt. Great care is taken to time their industrial action with political demonstrations, making it even more difficult for the rest of us to move across what fast becomes a suburban quagmire.

Strikes aside, if you haven't been to Rome or are coming soon, here's a quick guide!

Bus tickets: if you're a tourist it can be hell finding a place to get some. If you don't, you might be fined by inspectors who love the 40 and 492 routes in town. It's a 50 euros on the spot fine or about 110 euros if you have no cash. You'll have to take the bill you are given to any post office and pay up there, but of course you won't care about that when you're back home. You can buy bus / metro tickets in the Italian equivalent of a newsagent, just look for "tabacchi" on any street. Some bars sell bus / metro tickets too.

Bag sellers, umbrella sellers, picture sellers with nowhere to sleep at night unless you buy one occupy at least 10% of all available legroom on all buses in Rome 24/7. Call it free temporary storage. When buses in Rome get busy, Italians get stressed and begin to lose control, at which point we advise you to get off and hail a taxi.

Metro is better. Quicker, cleaner, but with a downside. Gypsies move through each carriage destroying traditional songs from back home and expecting to be paid for it by parading their most vulnerable looking child while the music plays. It's an uncomfortable experience for the rest of us, to say the least.

An Italian student, Vanessa Russo, was stabbed in the eye with an umbrella at Termini station a few years ago by teenage Romanian prostitute Doina Matei. Vanessa allegedly annoyed her killer (and friend) during an altercation while getting on / off her carriage, and, as a result, died in agony a few hours later in Policlinico nearby. Rare incidents of random acts of violence aside, the metro is pretty safe.

Football supporters will occupy Metro Linea A for an hour or so after either Roma or Lazio have played at home, but they're usually on the right side of rowdy, and, being Italian, prone to bursting into song. Just keep an eye on your jacket pockets and bag. It is said that 500 pickpockets work Rome's metro system every day. To be continued.

Vatican guides

Vatican tour guides. Quality control in a service industry dealing specifically with educating people about the finest paintings and sculptures in the world, would, one might reasonably assume, be a given. People who have for the most part travelled great distances to experience the history of Rome and the Vatican City expect a tour guide who really knows their stuff; qualified, licensed, polite, personable and punctual. What are the guarantees?

It is not an overly difficult task to pick out licensed Vatican tour guides when in the vicinity of St Peter's Square. Most of them are Italian and have studied for many, many years to earn their right to lead tours behind the Vatican walls. As for the worst of the rest, a first time visitor to Rome could well end up being guided through the marvels of the Sistine Chapel by a first time visitor to Rome! How's that? It's not unheard of for new arrivals to be trained up on how to tour the Vatican on their first evening in Rome via several beers with unscrupulous tour agency owners!

Advice? Ask your guide to display his or her official tour guide badge. If he or she cannot produce it, walk away and head for an official Vatican tours agency which employs official licensed tour guides. Tour guide examinations in Italy are notoriously tough, and those who get through are those with whom you must see Rome, the Vatican, and indeed anywhere else on the peninsula.

When in Rome, it is important to remember that In Rome Tours was founded upon the very high standards delivered by official, licensed tour guides. Of course, touring Rome with In Rome Tours is the wise choice, however, some students and graduates who flock to Rome for summer work do know their history too, but without the required ID it matters not. Strict regulations are already in place for the coming high season which will make a legal distinction between those who can work, and those who cannot.

Roman Rain

They are an electronic band from Moscow and possibly a film company in Rome, too, according to Angel Tours, but anyway, when it rains here, it pours! The original Roman rain. All sense of sensibility disappears down the drain and drives us all to distraction. Deserted streets, soggy trainers, giant umbrellas sheltering just one Italian. All of us flailing through the never, while the rest of us begin to behave in exactly the same way as those upon whom we frown, barging our impatient way through the despondency. It's do or drown, as Phil Oakey once sang. Maybe.

Only torrential rain could dampen the eternal appeal of Rome. The narrow streets which lead towards high Vatican City walls look particularly unappealing beneath a hood of grey clouds. Between the months and warmer climes of May and August, when the annual visitor count creeps up towards the 5m mark - that's alot of Rome tours - drier Rome becomes another world. For now, and it's still raining hard, the vast majority of tourists in search of a good quality, licensed tour operator are making their way to our premises on Via Sebastiano Veniero 21 by canoe.

Those who are left behind in the watery wind are welcome to do the same, we still have some bright red In Rome Tours umbrellas in need of a few heads!

If this horrid weather persists, we'll be ordering branded wellies and raincoats in the near future. For the most interesting Vatican and Rome tours come rain or shine, visit us when in Rome.

A quiet weekend in Rome

Saturday, February 5th, 2011 in Rome was a muted affair. Perhaps the narrow defeat of Italy by Ireland here at the Stadio Flaminio the pail that doused local Six Nations enthusiasm. However, the Irish community was out in force a week later to follow England 59 Italy 13 after the Manchester derby. Plenty of touristic publicity littered the expat pubs and bars between Termini station and Piazza Venezia offering Vatican tours, Colosseum tours, and other Rome tours in general, but in our office, it was a quiet day all round.

Italy meet Wales and then France on February 26th. and March 12th. respectively. For Rugby Union fans travelling to Rome to follow their team, we are offering €25 off our Vatican Highlights morning tour and afternoon Vatican tour as well as our shared Colosseum Rome tours. Travellers who would like to avail of this offer, kindly attend our office on Via Sebastiano Veniero 21 the day before the match with one of our tour flyers between 9am and 11am. Flyers can be found in the Druids Rock or Druids Den near Termini station.

Italian chances in this year's tournament are already slim, coach Nick Mallett had to endure shocking line outs, shoddy tackling and a real horror show from hooker Ghiraldini at Twickenham. We're hoping for renewed interest in the Six Nations here in Rome with an Italian win against the Welsh in a fortnight, however unlikely that may seem.

Walking up Via Flaminia to Stadio Flaminio when Italy are playing England, France, Scotland, Wales or Ireland has become a pilgrimage for Italian Rugby Union fans. Do they know about the ancient necropolis discovered beneath one side of the stadium in 2008 or the long history of Via Flaminia? Visit the In Rome Tours website to learn more and book tours of Rome too.

Helicopter tours, Rome - really?

It's another new and exciting on request activity from In Rome Tours, which, in truth, has very little to do with Rome at all, bar the fact that the heliport is located a few clicks north of the city. Strange as it may seem, helicopter tours "of Rome" don't hover directly over the city centre due to ATC restrictions, however, with the rest of the region immediately accessible, it's never been a problem!

Our prices are far from prohibitive, for perhaps twice the cost of seeing Rome on a private tour over one or two days, you can see alot from a helicopter with family, friends or clients. Perhaps the olden days of sightseeing in Rome on foot, by carriage, Segway, pedalo, you name it we've probably seen it etc. are over? Well, not quite. Vatican tours and other walking tours in Rome are simply necessary and that will never change, but what better way to experience such a beautiful country than from on high? Of course, on one of our helicopter tours, Italy's great cities can be visited too (by special request). Wherever you land, one of our private guides will be on hand to show you Venice, Palermo, Genoa, Turin, so on and so forth - there really are no limits on this activity, just your imagination!

If you are looking for an expedient and cost-effective way of seeing Italy - all of Italy - in one day, or even half a day, our helicopter tour services fit the bill perfectly. In the coming weeks we'll be listing new tours to the volcanoes of south Italy and Sicily, which will include connections by helicopter. If you are keen on seeing our active craters from the air with a focus on perhaps Mount Etna or Stromboli, let us know!

Italy shore excursions

Perhaps 500 limo / bus tour companies send their drivers to the ports of Civitavecchia, Livorno, Venice, Palermo and Messina every morning offering all manner of trips to weary tourists who are very much looking forward to seeing what they can of Italy. We all know, and have already discussed the fact that bus tours arranged by cruise lines here in Italy and probably everywhere else in the world are a waste of time and money. Limo tours offered by drivers who double as tour guides are the middle ground, in that tourists will be told what they are seeing in broken english, but no more. Is that really enough in a city as splendid as Rome, for example? A couple of anecdotes and some garbled history from behind the wheel your abiding memory of Etruscan, Republican and Imperial Rome? No, of course not. God forbid!

In an ideal world, every traveller arriving in Rome, Florence, Venice or Sicily from a cruise ship will have the good sense to pre-book tours. This will guarantee a great experience, something they'll never forget for all the right reasons.

It is unfortunate that the vast quantity of paid advertisements on search engines clutter the decision-making process. Limo, limo, limo, limo. NO! Think before you book. If you are happy to "explore" Rome, Florence or the canal city of Venice (!) by car, that's your choice, but by now it should be clear how much you could miss.

For shore excursions with expert guides who will meet you in your destination city after a rail connection that we arrange, send us your needs by e-mail at In Rome Tours.

Personal callers are always welcome at our Rome / Vatican office. Via Sebastiano Veniero 21 is just one block away from the Vatican Museums entrance.

Sightseeing in Rome

For the majority of visitors to Rome, an afternoon spent in the labyrinthine Vatican Museums is the absolute highlight of their stay. The Vatican tour they take must be as complete and fulfilling as possible, which is something we strive to achieve by offering three different Vatican tours. But what about sightseeing in Rome? Away from the vast collections of major works of art within the walls of the Vatican City?

A boat trip up the Tiber from Isola Tiberina to the bridges of Duca d'Aosta and Milvio costs a couple of euros, and if you'd like to spend more time on board, two hour trips to the ancient port of Ostia depart from Ponte Marconi pier which is located at the beginning of Via della Vasca Navale.

There are some beautiful gardens in Rome. In the stifling heat of summer when our streets are packed with tourists, where better to go? Of course Villa Borghese is known to all, like Zappion Gardens in Athens and Regents Park in London. In June and July, however, the landscaped gardens and wooded parkland around the Borghese Gallery and museum can become as busy as the city streets that surround.

Villa d'Este in Tivoli boasts perhaps some of the finest gardens in Italy, but distance from Rome is a stumbling block for some. Giardino degli Aranci on the Aventine hill, the Pincio overlooking Piazza del Popolo, or the sacred Vatican Gardens - be sure to see all of them when in Rome.

Rome is a vibrant and culturally diverse city as much today as in antiquity. There is a constant flow of events for each and every one of us to become a part of. In the coming weeks, In Rome Tours will publish a "What's On In Rome" guide, to make sure that sightseeing in Rome can also be experienced with locals.

New Rome tours commencing Spring 2011

Tours to Ostia - The ruins of Ostia Antica are some of the most impressive in Italy. Many travellers compare what they see there with the ruined city of Pompeii near Naples. Check out this introduction to Ostia Antica on YouTube. Our Ostia tours cover 2nd. to early 3rd. century trade, buildings, inhabitants and religion when Ostia was a thriving city port, daily life and times until the end of the Severan dynasty, then go back to the late Republican period when the commercial port was militarised for the Punic wars against Carthage. Ostia has suffered from pillaging for over 1,000 years, even today, many statues have had to be replaced with plaster cast copies. However, the large number of surviving residences, temples, mosaics and frescoes make Ostia as important an archaeological site as the Colosseum in Rome.

Tivoli tours - Our day trip to Tivoli from Rome can be booked online. Tivoli lies east of Rome and is over 1,300 years old. Famous for the ruins of Hadrian's villa, the spectacular Villa d'Este and Villa Gregoriana, our Tivoli tour is popular!

Food in Rome - You can definitely eat very well in the heart of historical Rome! If you'd like to savour the sweetest, most colourful gelato, the tastiest coffee, sample the traditional flavours of Testaccio, or just browse our favourite food stalls, you definitely do all of these when in Rome!

TripAdvisor Rome

There is so much subterfuge in the Rome tours section on TripAdvisor. First impressions would suggest that limo drivers and new tour operator website owners are offering services that are better than better than perfect every time, but upon closer inspection, two things become clear. Firstly, fake reviews are everywhere. Secondly, genuine tourism professionals in Rome who are simply too decent to write their own reviews can be only be found on pages 7 or 8 at best (due to the volume of fake reviews penned by competitors). TripAdvisor members who actually review their Rome tour experiences themselves are a rare breed these days, and the website is a poorer place for it. Is the once all-powerful (and respected) TripAdvisor to be trusted in 2011, if ever again? Does anyone really pay attention to reviews / comments anymore? Do travellers trust fake reviews? Yes, that does seem to be the case.

Beset with annoying consoles landing here, there and everywhere (pop ups, to you and I), unwieldy language options, and now, to top it all off, highly suspicious (paid) content moderation, TripAdvisor is looking rough. In the eyes of property owners and those of us who work our socks off in tourism, their website has become a parody of everything a responsible, corporate travel portal should never have been allowed to become.

Plenty of Rome tour websites trade exclusively on the back of their TripAdvisor reputation, but what reputation? Moderation has become so desperately slack that nigh on anyone can cobble together a TripAdvisor profile with a few dozen sparking reviews to get the BS ball rolling in a matter of days.

The acid test, as ever, is Google. Spend a couple of minutes there (or Yahoo!, Bing etc.) searching for the "top rated Rome tour websites" on TripAdvisor to see how they fare in the real world of the search engine algorithm. If they are as good as TripAdvisor thinks, they'll have been reviewed favourably on many other websites. Independent search engines will rank them highly as a result.

Guided Tours in Lviv

A new tourism venture in Ukraine called In Lviv tours is already in the news as their guides are injured veterans of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The project will help them with rehabilitation and employment. Founded in wartime, In Lviv Tours is a partner of In Rome Tours.

Limo Services Rome EU

Fraud. Not something one would immediately associate with the Vatican. A disturbing story emerged on St. Patrick's Day, not about an Irish tour guide, but an American tour operator (perhaps of Irish descent, perhaps not), who saw fit to sell tickets for the beatification of late Pope John Paul II for £150 each. Ok, we all work on mark ups for the services we provide, but £150 to get into an event which is free overstepped the mark somewhat. The Vatican City Tours website was already making tens of thousands of euros a month selling Vatican tours online (even though the owner was an illegal tour guide running an unlicensed agency), so why on earth did he defraud others?

The culprit is said to have been arrested in his Rome apartment, wherein police discovered 15 computers and 21 firearms. Two other websites are also being investigated: http://www.limoservicesrome.eu/ and http://www.italianservices.biz/ - new ownership status is pending on at least one of these domains (updated: February 25th. 2013).

Rome and the Vatican - Presentation Video

We hope you enjoy our new video about what to see and do when in Rome. Our Vatican Tours are not highlighted as there's a series of Vatican videos upcoming in late 2013. For this, our second audio visual outing, we've gone for a user friendly overview of Rome with Dvorak's splendid "Noon Witch".

Rome Vatican tours blog @?klkl

Many articles about Rome which were over at our WordPress blog are being rehoused. We've not been happy with WordPress SEO for a while so have bitten the bullet and called it a day with them... (?)

Once this mammoth task has been accomplished, you'll be able to read about Piazza Venezia and why it's loathed by the locals, understand more about moving through Roman traffic on a scooter and why it's the best way to see the city, or just hear from a devoted expat who just can't get enough of Rome come hell or high water - all here and happy on Blogger.

Seasonal news and views will discuss Xmas tours in Rome, Vatican tours at Christmas, a word or two about the legendary off license we all know and love as "Johnny's" in San Giovanni, and random odds and sods covering festive music during December which may or may not include Handel, Bach, Solitary Experiments, and local hero Simone Spiritual Front.

All of the above will land here very soon!

St. Peter's Dome Climb with In Rome Tours

Eternal Tours Rome now offer three unique Vatican tours for travellers who wish to avoid generic group tours of the Vatican.

To experience the Sistine Chapel with genuinely personal space for a truly fulfilling experience, Serene Sistine is perhaps your ideal.

Blend Vatican history with the Middle Ages on a tour that covers all the major works of art in the Vatican Museums, then dissects 1,800 years of events in ancient and historic Rome, during which time a colossal mausoleum became an impenetrable defensive fortress. Our rather intriguing Vatican Museums and Castle of Angels historic Rome and Vatican tour will surely surpass all expectations.

St. Peter's Dome Climb has been in vogue since 2018 and is now a cash cow for money-minded tour operators. They send up as many big groups as possible at the expense of all else. We, on the other hand, being a responsible Rome tour operator, do things rather differently...

As soon as St. Peter's Basilica opens in the early morning, tour guides who work for said operators make a beeline for the dome tickets booth just inside the entrance. They bulk buy tickets then hurry back to their respective meeting points dotted all around St. Peter's Square (usually beneath the colonnade) where their clients gather, oblivious to the process.

While the circus gathers pace, you are already inside St. Peter's Basilica with your dome climb ticket in hand! The clear instructions and directions we give you about where to buy official dome climb tickets for €10, and the St. Peter's Basilica audioguide that we provide (you will need it to understand what you are looking at), has put you 30 minutes ahead of everyone else. Clear, honest, simple. Without waiting, without overpaying, without stress. We get you to the top of the dome before all the groups and you pay much less than what the group tour people have paid to wait. We don't limit you to a schedule or itinerary either. St Peter's Dome at Dawn is the Vatican Dome Climb everyone needs!

Italy train tickets when in Rome (for tours)

When In Rome Tours was a tour operator in Rome with a physical address at Via Sebastiano Veniero 21, close to the Vatican Museums. Today, When in Rome guides check in their Vatican tour groups on the street ("Via Sebastiano Veniero 19") as the office closed in 2019. We're not sure what to make of this...

When In Rome Tours has no presence in Rome and it's been this way for several years. The owner scuttled off to Switzerland in 2020 and has since sold the business to Wandrian. A kind of washing hands, a cleansing. When In Rome Tours is now known as Italia Tours and they trade from the US, the UK, actually anywhere but Italy. How odd, after all, Italy keeps them all very well fed indeed.

Much of this "internationalism" is hardwired to Italia Rail, a reseller that convinces Americans to pay for Italy train tickets on their website instead of paying less on the official Italian train tickets English language website, Trenitalia. With ItaliaRail rated less than 2 stars out of 5 on Trustpilot with more than a few unusual reviews on Google, the writing is on the wall.

If you would like to know how to book train tickets in Italy without paying extra commissions, visit this trusted Rome tours and tickets website or ask a question in comments below.

Vatican tours and MAFIA connection

Vatican City Tours agency is history. Interestingly, we have learned that owners Thomas Burdick and Charlene Mitchell wrote "Blue Thunder", which investigates the murder of Donald J. Aronow in February 1987. The story involves George Bush, Chicago mobsters, and a colourful list of characters including Red Adair, Evil Knievel, and Ayatollah Khomeini.

The plot thickens in the knowledge that Burdick used to write for Playboy magazine, where he hatched the Aronow story. Burdick led at least one double life. Here in Rome, it was Vatican City Tours.

More news to follow about the Burdick / Mitchell mystery and of course our own tours of the Vatican, which are proving popular on TripAdvisor.

IN ROME TOURS REVISED BLOG I

Vatican City tours 2011

When booking tours of Rome, the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica must also be taken in to account. These places are extemely busy therefore your Vatican tour must be booked online in advance. Sifting through literally thousands of Vatican tour descriptions online will inform you to a point, but what else do Rome tour agencies offer visitors to the Vatican city? Of our guided and self-guided tours of the Vatican, we include unique options that are interesting for everyone. Travellers to the Vatican City want to know about the Circus of Nero, the ancient site where Christians were put to death from 65 AD, and, it is believed, where St. Peter was crucified.

The Vatican Obelisk on St. Peter's Square is a main attraction. It was moved there from Alexandria by Caligula in c. 37 AD, some 30 years before the executions began. Free of inscriptions, it was brought to Rome having commemorated the reign of Augustus in Egypt since c. 100 BC. Standing in front of St. Peter's Basilica on Piazza Pio XII, with the taxi rank and Galleria Savelli souvenir shop right side, the eastern end of the Circus of Nero is just fifteen feet away. It's underground ruins reach below St. Peter's Square then stretch behind the modern basilica to it's westernmost point, close to the Vatican railway station.

Lanciani's study of the old basilica of St. Peter and the exact location of the Circus of Nero can be found at LacusCurtius. This illustration shows both structures as well as the (new) basilica as we see it today.

Shore excursions Rome

Shore excursions to the Vatican City from the port of Civitavecchia are routinely expensive, so naturally we buck the trend and operate a superior pick up service, also from Livorno (to Florence and elsewhere in Tuscany) and Naples as part of our Italy Shore Excursions. Send us a message about shore excursions to Rome and save time as well as money.

Keep reading to learn more about our shore excursion Rome options and offers. You can request Rome shore excursions and we'll send you a personalized quote.

Time is of the essence whenever a ship docks and there are places to get to. It's well worth calculating the approximate distances involved in order to minimize transfer time and see as much as possible en route as well as at the destination. While plenty of transfer time is required to move from the ports of Livorno and Civitavecchia to Florence and Rome, Venice is an exception as port and city are one and the same. In Sicily, both Palermo and Messina are proximal to areas of outstanding natural beauty. Segasta, Monreale, Cefalù and the Madonie mountains are all within an hour's drive from Palermo. Taormina and Castelmola are easily accessible from a Messina port transfer. We can arrange shore excursions and transfers from all of these Italian ports.

Shore excursions from Civitavecchia to Rome, Roman towns, and the surrounding countryside can include Viterbo, Bracciano, Tivoli, Ariccia and Anzio

Day trips from Rome from your cruise ship include a Sedan Mercedes E-Class (up to 2 pax), Minivan Mercedes Viano (max 7 pax) or Minibus Mercedes (max 16 pax). Always air conditioned vehicles with all mod cons and leather interiors.

Our Shore excursions Italy service that include the ports of Messina and Palermo in Sicily offer incredible value. We'll add a Rome and Italy shore excursions page on our Rome tours website in due course. Wherever your cruise ship docks on the peninsula, we'll pick you up and show you the very best Italy has to offer. High quality shore excursions from Rome, Naples, Venice, Livorno, Palermo and Messina.

Which Vatican tour guide when in Rome?

Back at the Vatican, walking across Piazza Risorgimento then following the Vatican walls round to the museums entrance, one can expect to have to share space with a large number of eager tourists. Big tour groups on coaches also arrive with a guide who has travelled to Rome with them from as far afield as the United Kingdom, France and Poland. More often than not, these people have paid for a Rome pilgrimage, a group tour to Rome organised by their local parish or similar community.

Many visitors to Rome book their Vatican tours and other tours of Rome on our website that currently offers 33 privately guided Rome tours, self-guided tours and hybrid activities. On the travel date of their shared Rome tour, they attend our office (a stone's throw away from the Vatican Museums entrance) and wait for their guide or we can meet them at their hotel or other accommodation in Rome if a private tour of Rome has been booked. In our offices, refreshments and a rest room are available. Any questions about the tour or indeed anything else about Rome are answered by In Rome Tours reception staff. We also have walk in tours for visitors who have not pre-booked online. They pass by our office, pay at the desk, then join the next Vatican tour (or book one of our other tours).

An ever-increasing number of "agencies" now operate on the streets that surround St. Peter's Square. Their tour guides know their history inside out and it's relatively unheard of for a Vatican guide to falter in the face of historical fact. However, it goes without saying that it is sensible to pre-book tours online, or at least attend the premises of a licensed tour operator close to the Vatican, where one can arrange a once in a lifetime tour properly in a relaxed and professional environment. Guides who work on the street, and they'll expect a cash payment on the street too, are to be avoided.

Vatican tours in Rome

We have several unique tours of the Vatican to choose from, each starting at a different time of day, and each with a varied itinerary to suit all ages and all interests. Our Vatican tours can begin from the In Rome Tours office on Via Sebastiano Veniero 21, close to the Vatican Museums entrance, or close to St. Peter's Square. Meeting point details are included in booking confirmations.

Our Vatican tours are as follows:  Vatican Treasure Hunt  Vatican Museums & Castle of Angels  St. Peter's Dome at Dawn

Our Vatican tours are centred on our legendary "Vatican Quest", a document penned by the greatest Vatican tour guide in history, many, many moons ago. With the Vatican Quest in hand, you will see and learn infinitely more than travellers who opted to book an in-person guided Vatican tour.

Guided Vatican tours generally include all the major works of art and important rooms such as those of Raphael, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica - with or without dome climb. Our Vatican tour of St. Peter's ascends the dome and includes the entirety of the basilica and square.

Our opinion is that St. Peter's dome climb is an essential activity when in Rome, while inside the Vatican Museums, our Vatican Quest is quintessential, hence we include it on our other two tours of the Vatican.

Pompeii tours

Further south, in the region of Campania, we offer multiple tours of Pompeii from Rome. You can also tour Herculaneum as well as Pompeii in one day or perhaps just tour one site and then enter the other on a self-guided activity. Everyone is different, and we feel that in so far as Pompeii tours from Rome are concerned, we've got all bases covered. For private Pompeii tours and tours of Herculaneum, visit In Pompeii Tours.

Our prices per person for tours in Pompeii and Herculaneum from Rome are outstanding, so do have a look at all your options about touring Pompeii in a day from Rome.

Private Pompeii tours have become rather important due to the big groups we see every day in Pompeii (often 30 people, sometimes 50 people per guide...). Tours of Pompeii over at In Pompeii Tours are fully private and their guides meet clients at Pompeii main railway station, a short walk away from the ruins. It's a perfect scenario when visiting Pompeii, and again, their prices are seriously impressive.

As you may already know, Pompeii and Herculaneum were famously destroyed in AD 79 at the start of the brief reign of Titus Flavius Vespasianus. The Pompeiani were killed by surges of intense heat emanating from Vesuvius during 48 hours of severe eruptions, then buried beneath ash and pumice. We refer to Pompeii today as the destroyed city, and Herculaneum as the preserved city. Visit both with In Rome Tours and you'll understand why.

Naples & tour to Amalfi Coast

Yet further south, Sorrento, Capri and the Amalfi Coast can be visited. These beautiful places are teetering on the brink of overtourism and they must be experienced sooner rather than later. We can arrange transport and tours from Naples to Amalfi and beyond on request from either In Rome Tours or In Pompeii Tours as you prefer.

For more information about day trips to Naples from Rome, tours to Pompeii from Rome, or just day trips departing Rome, visit us at In Rome Tours and drop us a line.

Lviv Tours

We've recently published a website about Lviv tours guided by veterans. Please visit and have a look at how war against russia has impacted upon tourism in Ukraine.

Everything was good from leaving Rome to reaching Naples and then the volcano train to Pompeii. We walked to the meeting point and met Dario, our wonderful guide and archaeologist. We were back in Rome by early evening too. Thank you!

Wonderful tour from Soprendente Sandra!

Sandra's tour was amazing. So organised, knowledgeable and friendly. She brought this incredible place to life with the history behind it.

What a wonderful day!

We had an amazing day in Pompeii! Began in Rome of course and we had our e-tickets in hand for the very fast and comfy bullet express train to Naples. After an hour or two wandering around the fascinating port city and eating local street food here and there we took the local train to Pompeii and found our guide quickly. The tour of Pompeii was great fun and we learned alot about the archaeology of the city and the volcanic eruption. Getting back to Naples on the same local train was easy and we were in very good time for our return express train to Rome. Such a great away day from Rome after 3 days of the Colosseum and Vatican crowds. This was our great escape!

Super In Rome Tours - 5 Stars Day!

We intended to book this through Viator but ended up contacting In Rome Tours directly to get straight answers to our questions about train schedules. Actually they were brilliant from the beginning, planning our day with precise schedules on the trains from Naples to Rome and Naples to Pompeii. The tour guide allocated to us was amazing, Anna, an archaeologist, and she had so much to tell us about the archaeology of Pompeii. After we had chatted with In Rome Tours on WhatsApp, a gentleman called Peter, we booked immediately and then we did notice some quite nasty travelers who had written bad reviews that blamed In Rome Tours because they missed their own trains that In Rome Tours had booked for them and paid for. Pretty pathetic. Not their fault. We had no issues at all making the trains and all in all the day was really fun, exciting and informative. Grazie! Sandra and Theo.

Impressed by In Rome Tours - Service and Value

We had a wonderful day in Pompeii with In Rome Tours. The train to Naples was comfortable and not busy and getting down to Pompeii was simple enough. We were sent our tickets and that information was on the timetables in Napoli Piazza Garibaldi station which is directly beneath Napoli Centrale main station where the first train from Rome stopped. Pompeii today is a small modern town, quite typical of so many in Italy. The railway station is unremarkable and we walked to the meeting point and checked in for the tour. It was a two hours and 20 minutes exploration and our guide, an American Italian local and working archaeologist, was a real expert with an incredible eye for detail. Thank you Gloria for your superb tour! Back in Naples, In Rome Tours CS stayed with us on WhatsApp and guided us minute by minute to the best pizza we've EVER had, and we've been visiting Italy often in recent years. Thank you Viator and In Rome Tours! Very impressed.

Great tour!

Wonderful tour guide and amazing experience! Pompei is a must see! Viator is very professional and great to work with as a travel professional myself.

The Best Day of our Italian Vacation!

Very late in writing this and we had to be reminded twice by the tour company, SORRY! We had a fabulous day in Pompeii from Rome!! Perfectly planned and we were in good time for each segment in and out of Naples. We met another couple on the train to Pompeii from Naples on the same tour as us, we've kept in contact since and we all agree that our guide Marina was excellent, not just an archeologist, a wonderful person too. We're all recommending this day trip as it was the highlight of our Italy vacation! Miriam G.

Expertly guided in Pompeii and a very organized day trip from Rome

Our Pompeii from Rome day was brilliant, everything went to plan and right on time. The morning train from Roma Termini was super modern and very fast, a real bullet train! We were in Naples in about an hour where we had breakfast on a bustling piazza a few minutes from the station. We headed back there to get the local train to Pompeii and 20 mins walk away from there is where we met our guide Stefano around lunchtime. The check in office was small but we just had to give them our tour voucher and that was all. Pompeii itself is just sooo incredible, we can't recommend it highly enough for anyone in Rome thinking about booking this tour. The site is really big so compared with visiting the Coliseum you are not in crowded space at any time. It was so helpful to have someone at In Rome Tours available on WhatsApp for the entire day too, they even answered lingering questions we had about some of the frescos in Pompeii when we were back in Rome (we sent them by WhatsApp). Really great guide, amazing places seen and real comfort between Rome and Naples.

Second time in Pompeii with In Rome Tours - Superb!

This was our second visit to Pompeii in 6 months, having visited in August 2023 on the Pompeii ticket and Herculaneum guided tour combo, also by In Rome Tours.

The first thing to say is both sites need to be toured, and the second that Pompeii is a BIG place so you'll need about 5 hours, most of that guided. Anyway, our trip this time from Rome was very comfortable and expertly organized by In Rome Tours. When we arrived in Naples they were with us digitally on WhatsApp the entire time to make sure we were in the right place at the right time for the connection to Pompeii.

The tour itself was first class, and our group just 8 people. Sonia was our guide and she was careful to explain everything in a clear way to our kids, age 9 and 12. After the tour we stayed in Pompeii for 3 more hours, this was scheduled by In Rome Tours to give us maximum sightseeing time with no rushing.

Back in Naples from Pompeii station we had time to get a quick taxi and pick up street food for the trip back to Rome, also planned by In Rome Tours who sent us alot of options to get the best local pizza - very happy with this part!

All in all, a very worthwhile and satisfying return to Pompeii and Naples for us. We'll be back in Rome in June and are already looking at the amazing day trips departing from Rome on the In Rome Tours website.

Fabulous Private Caravaggio Tour in Rome!

Thanks to TripAdvisor we found what we were looking for, that being a specific private tour of Caravaggio that visited all of his paintings in the churches and galleries of Rome. Our brilliant guide working for In Rome Tours is an American Art Historian, Elle, and she gave a fantastic full day tour. In Rome Tours have a very interesting portfolio of private Rome tours, not only Caravaggio. We're already considering their Michelangelo tour later this month.

Very nice trip to Pompeii from rome

Really impressive tour with maria in Pompeii and nice train rides all the way from rome to Naples and between naples and Pompeii. Lots of time after the tour too to see even more. Great value and very happy with the experience.

Spectacular day in the Ruins of Pompeii

We were a group of 14 and we're all gradually reviewing our AMAZING day and Pompeii tour one by one. The trains were wonderful, fast and sleek! In Pompeii our guide Dario from Naples was so helpful and very well informed about Pompeii history. We learned ALOT. Returning to Rome was also amazing with our memories full of great moments. Thx to In Rome Tours, we are all still glowing from this day trip!

Tivoli villas from Rome booked through InRome Tours

Our day was very well planned by In Rome Tours. All was arranged, from rail tickets from Rome to entrances to each of the Villas in Tivoli. Villa d'Este is in the town and Hadrian's villa a little out of town but the bus from the railway station took us there in about 15 minutes. We spent about 3 hours in each and the tour operator was always available to advise on WhatsApp and that was convenient for us throughout the day. Most tour companies leave their clients high and dry after payment for tours, as we found out in Rome (twice), but In Rome Tours do things a different way and totally support their travelers from start to end. Can absolutely recommend this trip and the company. Richie D.

To Pompeii from Rome!

Ciao! We were in a group of 14 and Sally and I wish to say that for a full day trip, with several trains between Rome and Naples and Pompeii, the day went swimmingly! Super guide in Pompeii and directions / instructions were absolutely spot on. Great!!

Just what I wanted - - Pompeii tour from Rome

I shopped around for a Pompeii tour from Rome with adequate travel, without lunch, wine tastings etc., just the Pompeii tour, time after it to sightsee on my own and then back to my hotel in Rome.

This was perfect. Evenly priced, great communication from payment to the day of travel. Thanks to TripAdvisor I found the In Rome Tours site (a great one with really fascinating tours) and booking was immediate.

I can really recommend this day trip, it was exactly what I wanted. My guide Maria in Pompeii was excellent and the trains were good there and back.

 Thx again, Andrew (Davies)

Group of 14 in Pompeii from Rome

In a group of 14 on the day and on behalf of all of us it was a really great experience, the travel, the tour in Pompeii and how the operator prepared everything was perfect. Many thanks, Jo, Allen.

Pompeii tour after Xmas in Rome

I travelled with colleagues to Rome on a business trip after the Xmas vacation and decided to book this on the spot. Well worth the very reasonable cost. The travel was smooth, instructions clear, and the tour in Pompeii led by Angela was first class. Great day grazie.

A Wonderful day for us

This was a wonderful day for us, perfectly planned and executed by In Rome Tours in Rome where we were based. The Pompeii tour led by Dario was immaculate and the express train between Rome and Naples was very comfortable, fitting in nicely with our dinner plans in Rome in the evening. Thank you so much for this great value experience!

Perfect Pompeii Weekend in Rome!

Booked on the spur of the moment after watching the rugby! Fun day away from the city on the Italian equivalent of France's TGV to Naples and then a connection from there to Pompeii. Our tour was just 6 people and Graziana, our guide, a Pompeii local who has been leading tours in her town of birth for 20 years, taught us so much about what happened when the volcano erupted. This was an extra highlight on my most recent trip to Italy for the Six Nations that I gladly recommend for everyone.

TRIPADVISOR REVIEWS OF IN ROME TOURS I

Great tour of the Vatican and Roman Forum tour!

Great experience with our personal guides John and Enrica. They gave life and context to the Roman ruins and antiquities that we were able to see. They are also just fun people to interact with generally. Recommend In Rome Tours wholeheartedly.

Three Great privately guided Rome tours

My family took three tours from In Rome Tours: On March 14, 2023 we took the Rome at night tour with Mario. Mario was very knowledgeable and energetic and told us the history of the Spanish steps, the rivalry between the two main architects at the time and we saw many beautiful structures in Rome like the Trevi fountain. Rome at night has its own beauty at night and this tour is much recommended. This tour is a walking tour and may be hard for the elderly and small children.

On March 15, 2023 we took the Vatican tour with Cynzia, who was also amazing. She explained which religious figures are painted by the cloths or objects they are carrying and this helped to decode these religious paintings whose meaning were a mystery to me for many years until the explanation by Cynzia. Cynzia also told us the meaning of the nine main panels on the Cisteine Chapel, showing God forming light and day to the middle panels showing the creation of Adam and Eve, the temptation of the apple and banishment from Eden to the latter panels showing Noah's flood. This was the most intellectually stimulating tour due to the large amount of art and Cynzia giving meaning of the art. This tour has a lot of walking and was very difficult for my elderly mother but Cynzia was very kind for getting my mother a wheelchair and she also waited for us to catch up with her.

On March 16 2023 we went to the Forum, Colluseum and Palatine Hill tour with Luca. Luca is an archeologist and was perfect to explain the history of these three places. His explanation of the history of the places was very detailed and energetic. It was cool to see where Ceasar was assassinated in the Senate building. Luca was also willing to field questions and gave very detailed answers. The Palatine Hill has a lot of walking and climbing stairs and I let my elderly mother skip this portion of the tour. The only negative in this tour was that my mother's purse was pick pocketed in the Colloseum and she lost $580. We were able to find the missing wallet from her purse the next day at the carabenieri station at Cielomontana street with the money missing but the credit cards and drivers licence still present. They should be signs in the Coloseum warning of pickpockets like they have at the Louvre in Paris. This is not a fault of Luca nor that of In Rome Tours. This was the best tour company I have been to. It could be better by picking up people from the hotel and having the meeting place closer to the Vatican museum so elderly people don't need to walk too far. Otherwise it is a perfect tour company.

Vatican tour with Cynzia, Enthralling

This is simply the best tour I've ever been on. Cynzia was unbelievably knowledgeable. She answered every question with precise, detailed answers. She provided an unbelievable amount of historic context for each of the pieces we saw. I was impressed by the way she built up our "renaissance art alphabet" toolkit before we got to the Sistine chapel so that we had a better appreciation for what we were seeing. For someone coming in with very little knowledge or appreciation of renaissance art, I was impressed, moved, and enthralled. More than anything, I appreciated her deep knowledge of the personal history of each of the individual artists to help us understand how they developed their aesthetic over time.

One note. The earsets were INVALUABLE. Every tour should include these. It allowed Cynzia "to be in our heads". And most importantly, we didn't have to strain to hear. No question in my mind that this helped us to maintain a high level of interest in the tour. I've never been a big believer in tours, but I am going to book an In Rome Tour for Florence (our next leg). Any reccomendations on the right tour guide?

Rome at Night with Gabriel

We took the Rome at Night tour with Gabriel. Pitch the fancy shoes and wear the comfortable ones. Our family, 2 daughters enjoyed the tour. Lots of walking, but Gabriel made it very entertaining and kept a comfortable pace. For our first visit to Rome, we thought this would be a great way to safely walk around and get acquainted with the city. Great choice. Gabriel pointed out a number of unique back alley points of interest that added a lot of color to Rome, in addition to the main attractions. It rained in buckets that night and Gabriel kept on without hesitation. Very memorable as we were all soaking wet afterwards and had very little company as all the smart people were inside. Well worth the money and I would encourage this group tour the first evening of opportunity. We felt very comfortable walking everywhere after this tour.

Great Rome tour trip and best guide

This was my wife's first trip overseas and she was very nervous about the trip. InRomeTours was nothing short of spectacular. Due to bad weather in Atlanta our bags did not make it to Rome until the next day. My wife was very upset, but we met Josie our guide, that afternoon and she turned what was starting out as a disaster to one of the best days of our lives. Josie was so nice, knowledgeable and flexible. Peter had left a message at our hotel before we even arrived in Rome and was always responsive to our needs. We were so impressed we were recommending In Rome Tours to people we met on the ship, but were going to stay in Rome after we returned from the cruise. Do yourself a favor whether you are spending all your time in Rome our maybe cruising out of there, as we did. DO NOT book with the cruise ship as their services will herd you around like cattle. The cost for In Rome Tours is no more than those other guys and you will get the personnel service you need. We booked tours at our ports of call through the ship and my wife and I were very disappointed after our experience with Josie. I highly recommend InRomeTours and welcome your emails to tuttm@northwood.edu.

Beautiful tours in Rome!

One of the most spectacular tourist attractions I have ever seen. You should pre-order tickets or visit with a private tour as often the waiting time is hours. I visited this with a tour guide from In Rome Tours who were fantastic and fast tracked me through hours of queuing in the rain. The tourist shop is ridiculously expensive but worth a look.

Most informed Rome tour guide for our Vatican visit

I just wanted to add my review to others here. We had a wonderful guide who was very well informed and made our visit to to the Vatican. It was my 3rd visit and was my best by far. Our guide knew many interesting amusing and interesting facts which really made our visit to Rome. I can't recommend In Rome Tours enough!

In Rome Tours was FANTASTIC... best way to know Rome!

We took a private 3 hour Historic Center Tour of Rome, with In Rome Tours. Our guide, Manuela, was really terrific!!! Not only was she thoroughly knowledgeable about everything we saw, but she was quite friendly and very accommodating as to what we wanted to see. Manuela was able to squeeze in so much in just three hours! We were very pleased with the cost of the tour - it was much lower than we had anticipated for a private tour - and we were also very impressed with the communications we received from Pete, the gentleman who arranged the tour for us. It was definitely worth every single penny!!! There is really no better way to see Rome than with a guide who was able to explain so much about the history of what it was we were looking at. We should have booked ALL of our tours with In Rome Tours!

We took two other tours while we were in Rome with a company called Viator and they were AWFUL!!! We were VERY disappointed with Viator for the over-priced, under-informative tour of the Vatican, and the over-priced bus trip tour of Tuscany. I wish we knew about inrometours before we ever took those other two tours. What a waste of money they were. Live and learn.

Grazie, Manuela! And thank you, Pete... we were very happy with your service and will definitely recommend you to friends and family headed to Rome!

Superior In Rome Tour of the Vatican Museums

Despite living in Rome for 3 years I never visited the Vatican Museums so on a recent return trip to Italy, my husband and I booked a 3 hour tour with In Rome Tours.

Our lovely British guide Josie met us at our hotel to escort us to the Vatican. Once inside, and as talking and presentations are not allowed in the Sistine Chapel, Josie began with a great introduction to Michelangelo's masterpiece and how it evolved, as we sat on the sunny terrace. Josie's background in History of Art and Education really showed in her interesting and informative presentation. It was really rewarding to be shown the most important and significant items in the museum by someone who clearly knows her stuff, so much better than a guide book. We had particularly requested to see the Raphael rooms so Josie duly gave us extra time there (not to be missed!) pointing out details we would have otherwise not have noticed.

With Josie's info fresh in our heads we reached the Sistine Chapel which was as spectacular as we'd hoped! We finished with time in St Peter's basilica and all too soon had to say good bye to lovely Josie, the three hours had flown by. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to learn about the most important pieces of this overwhelmingly vast museum from a very professional and friendly guide.

The best way to see Rome is with In Rome Tours of course!

We got a private tour of the colisseum, forum and other sites in ancient Rome. The experience was fantastic, it really brought the ruins to life. Our guide was so determined, she even continued educating us when a hailstorm broke out on Palatine Hill! (My wife and I, and the guide, took shelter under one of the Emporer's ceilings.) Highly recommended.

Just book with In Rome Tours

The tour we undertook with three children was pefect for a family wanting to see the sights of Rome in the most hassle free manner. Our guide, Suzanne, managed to capture the spirit of Ancient Rome and bring it alive for the children whilst also providing a more in depth appreciation for the adults. Keeping the attention of 3 children was a difficult task which she managed expertly. The arrangements were easily made with In Rome Tours and we very much felt we had a tailored itinery rather than a standard tour. I would recommend In Rome Tours and Suzanne without hesitation.

There's knowledgeable and then there's In Rome Tours!

Vatican (5-6hr tour) - our guide was Luca, he met the small group (12) pleasantly learning all of our names and a little about each of us. Luca took us swiftly inside bypassing the 2 hour queue for tickets and started the tour. Luca's knowledge absolutely astounded me and my friend along with others on the tour - the detail he knew about specific pieces of art work and the location in general was amazing. Luca skillfully lead us through the masses of artwork and sculptures stopping to discuss the most interesting and best artwork. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the Vatican and St Peters Bascilica - highly recommended tour from In Rome Tours, well worth the money!!

Roman Forum and Coliseum tour

Ivana was an incredibly knowledgeable and informative guide. She is an archeologist by training and clearly loves her subject. And she loves giving tours! She used a book of images to help us visualize what the Forum would have looked like in ancient times - really changed our appreciation for what we were seeing. She was also great at engaging my thirteen year old son. And In Rome Tours was very accommodating when I asked to change the date of our tour. All in all, they couldn't have been better. Well worth the price of the tour!

A private tour with In Rome Tours is worth every penny - the experience can never be matched by a big coach tour.

After our Imperial Forum Tour with John who was excellent, we booked the second Vatican tour with him (that tour ran to just over 4 hours so I did voluntarily pay an additional £30 directly to John). I also recommended him to a couple staying in our hotel. John was efficient, knowledgable and friendly, providing us with an abundance of information throughout the tour. His views were unbiased and he was also just good company. I was extremely pleased with customer care, which was much more customer focused, entrepreneurial and friendly than some of the other tour operators. This tour also confirmed for me that the amount of information, and level of efficiency and customer care you get from a private tour can never be matched by one of those big coach tours with dozens of people. In terms of what you get for your money, a private Rome tour with In Rome Tours is actually far better value.

Borghese Gallery tour - Knowledgeable guide.

Our guide arrived at our hotel at the time promised. We took a cab to Galleria Borghese and our tickets had been pre-purchased which saved us a lot of time in line. Shane our guide from Ireland spoke perfect English as promised. We have been on tours with other operators where we had trouble understanding the guides. We spent 2 hrs viewing the art collection with excellent descripitions and commentary from Shane. He was extremely knowledgeable about all the art in the gallery. He planned our tour well as you only have two hours in the museum. It would have been easy to get off time and miss parts of the gallery. The Borghese tour was as advertised with no suprises.

Wonderful Rome tours

Great tour guide, my son and I really enjoyed the underground section of the Colosseum. It really is a worthwhile experience, a must see!

Pompeii tours direct from Rome

This was a perfect way to travel to Pompeii from Rome. No wasting time on a bus. The tour was perfect in length, we had a good amount of time at the ruins. This is the best way to make the most of your time while on vacation in Rome.

Best Day Trip from Rome to Pompeii!

Thank you Gloria for your absolutely superb tour!

Back in Naples, In Rome Tours CS stayed with us on WhatsApp and guided us minute by minute to the best pizza we've EVER had, and we've been visiting Italy often in recent years. Thank you In Rome Tours! Very impressed.
