Chiaramonti Museums (1) This particular gallery houses a vast collection (c. 1000 pieces) of ancient Roman sculpture, including portrait busts of Emperors, Senators and Philosophers.
Chiaramonti Museums (2) Braccio Nuovo (New Wing) built by Raphael Stern, forms part of the Chiaramonti Galleries and houses the Augustus of Prima Porta (the definitive portrait of the First Roman Emperor), statues of Greco-Roman divinities and elite members of Roman society, a marble portrait bust of Julius Caesar, a monumental representation of the Nile and mosaic floors lifted from ancient villas and housing.
The Belvedere Courtyard Situated within the Belvedere Palace, it houses two of the most important sculptural works in the Vatican Museums collection, the Apollo Belvedere and the Laocoön Group. The palace was originally used as the Papal summer retreat. The courtyard per se was designed by Donato Bramante, Papal Architect to Pope Julius II, friend of Raphael and arch rival of Michelangelo, but completed after his death (1514) by Pirro Ligorio for Pius IV between 1562-65.
