There are rules that must be adhered to before entry into St. Peter's Basilica (1506-1626, 120 years in the making) is granted and they are as follows: no hats (laymen), no shorts or skirts above the knee, no shirts which expose the navel or are without sleeves and no excessive accessories or jewellry. Flash photography in the Basilica is permitted excluding the Holy Trinity oil painting by Pietro da Cortona. All other original canvas paintings were removed and replaced with mosaics which are now kept in the Vatican Museums. Between 1731 and 1822, canvases hung in St. Peter's Basilica were reproduced in mosaic form by the Studio Vaticano del Mosaico to save them from irreparable damage by humidity, smoke and soot deposition from prolonged candle burning. The specialist workshop was inaugurated in 1727 and led by Cristofari, but only until chemist A. Mattioli made it possible to produce up to 15,000 hues did work begin in earnest. All photography inside the Sistine Chapel is banned. Flash photography inside the Pinacoteca in the Vatican Museums is not permitted.
