We lead our newest tour through undisturbed greenfield land due south of Rome on the Appia Antica. The catacombs lie beneath wild and ancient woodland known today as Caffarella Valley. Crypts and Catacombs covers three separate and distinct sites, so we use our air-conditioned limo service to manage the requisite transfers between each location as swiftly and comfortably as possible. About half an hour is spent below ground in each of the 2nd - 4th Century AD catacombs of San Callisto, San Sebastiano and Santa Domitilla. You and your guide will be met and then escorted through each catacomb by the presiding religious order.
Options to modify this tour are (1) Ardeatine Caves where 335 Italians were eventually shot and killed by drunk German troops on March 24th 1944, orders for which came directly from Nazi High Command; (2) Capuchin Crypt, six tiny chapels the last exit for over 4,000 Capuchin Friars who died between 1528-1870; (3) Catacombs of Sant'Agnese and Mausoleum of Santa Costanza, the final resting place of Emperor Constantine's two daughters, Constantina and Helena; (4) Catacombs of Priscilla below the Monastery of the Benedictines of Priscilla preserve the oldest known image of the Madonna and Child, from c. 230 AD.
