The Roman Forum, the central hub of the ancient city, nestles in a natural depression at the base of two of Rome’s fabled seven hills, the Palatine and the Capitoline. In the remotest times, the area was a marshy wetland, primarily used by the various tribes that had settled on the surrounding hills as an archaic burial ground. In the 7th Century BC, however, the practice of burial ceased with the first major construction in the area, the Cloaca Maxima - this great sewer drained the boggy land and made building possible in the valley for the first time. Amongst these early buildings was the King's Palace, the Temple of Vesta and the Regia (House of the Pontifex Maximus, Rome’s high priest) as well as the main square for public gatherings. In 509 BC, Tarquin the Proud, the last of Rome’s legendary seven kings, was overthrown by the people and the Roman Republic was subsequently formed. Military might, conquest and victory characterized the Republic from the offset and the expansion of Rome began, first throughout the Italian Peninsular and then to the further flung lands of Carthage and Greece. Eventual control of the Mediterranean basin bought an influx of slave labour and a wealth of war booty to the city and the Roman Forum itself, already the civic heart of Rome, steadily became a testament to the glory and power of the Republic.

/ Where now the Forum lies, were pools of water and marshland, streams for the Tiber's flood swelled high the banks of the brook, /
/ Where now through the Velabrum processions move toward the Circus, willows grew for the herds, and reeds that shook in the wind. /
(Ovid, Fasti VI-401 ff., 8 AD) |
