IMPERIAL FORUM TOUR
The Roman Forum by R. G. (2/6) |
Triumphal arches, victory columns, magnificent basilicas (public halls) and temples filled the area which also contained the Curia (Senate House) and a wide variety of shops, markets, brothels and religious institutions. However, by the 1st Century BC, corruption marred the Republic and power struggles between over mighty generals and their legions commenced. The last of the over mighty generals, Julius Caesar, attempted to restore parts of the forum which had now descended into rack and ruin. He extended the area with the creation of the Forum of Caesar. This additional space was annexed to the Roman Forum itself and featured the Temple of Venus Genetrix, dedicated to the Roman goddess from whom Caesar's family claimed to be descended. After Caesar’s assassination in 44 BC, Rome was racked with civil war until his adopted son and great nephew Octavian restored stability by seizing power as the self-styled 'Princeps' or 'First Citizen' of the Republic. In effect, this title was akin to that of the modern day term of 'Emperor'. The Senate later bestowed the name of Augustus (most Revered One) on the young ruler. During his long reign, Augustus set out to restore lasting peace and prosperity across the Roman World. In Rome he began a vast urbanization project of the Campus Martius (today's historical centre).
