The Palatine Hill towers over the Roman Forum, 40 metres at it's highest point and steeped in legend, more so perhaps than any other ancient site in the World. It's influence continues to resonate throughout Western culture and civilisation, and is believed by some to conceal the Lupercal cave. Tradition tells of a mythological grotto wherein Romulus and Remus were 'found' and nurtured by a she-wolf. However strange it may seem, modern day enthusiasts took it upon themselves to determine it's real location. Archaeological work in 2007 pointed to an indistinct chamber located directly beneath the ruins of Domus Livia (House of Livia, former home of Emperor Augustus) at a depth of 15.5 metres, but any notion of it being the Lupercal cave was swiftly dismissed by academics within days of it's discovery. The beautifully decorated grotto (8m x 7.3m) was almost certainly a Nymphaeum or Triclinium (dining room) from Neronian times (37 AD - 68 AD), however, it may have served as a sanctuary to perpetuate the founding tradition in later years. Walking through the ruins of buildings once called home by Roman Emperors is a humbling experience, whether you are a stickler for historical fact or have a real passion for Roman Mythology. Flanked by the Roman Forum and Circus Maximus, Collis Palatium as the most central of the Seven Hills symbolizes Rome.
