IMPERIAL FORUM TOUR
::: Every day of the week. |
Trajan (52 AD - 117 AD) accepted the purple in 98 AD after being adopted by Nerva at 45 years of age. The Emperor's conduct equated to abdication but he was acting under duress. The Praetorian Guard and their cohorts ensured the rise of Marcus Ulpius Nerva Traianus at Nerva's expense. Trajan was a respected General prior to and during his time as Emperor, victorious in Germania he quelled the Revolt of Saturninus in 89 AD. Trajan's Forum was a major construction project entrusted to the architect Apollodorus of Damascus by Domitian. Inaugurated in 112 AD it measured 120m across and 200m in length, approximately twice as long and twice as wide as a modern football pitch. A colossal equestrian statue of Trajan in bronze took pride of place, dwarfing a similar representation of Marcus Aurelius in today's Capitoline Museum. Other than the pedestal, nothing else has ever been found. Dramatic statues of defeated Dacian warriors graced the stoa-lined square, and expansive exedrae pronounced the grandiose effect. Basilica Ulpia at the northern end drew political life away from Caesar's forum until 312 AD. The main entrance, a triumphal arch dominated by a statue of Trajan drawing a six-horse chariot, adorned the southern end. Two libraries, one Latin and the other Greek originally flanked Trajan's column.
