  In the year 64 AD, the Great Fire of Rome raged through much of the city. In the aftermath, the ruling emperor Nero, confiscated large tracts of land situated near the Roman Forum from the wealthy senatorial class with a means to use it as the site of his private villa. The celebrated architects, Severus and Celler were called in for the job and under Nero’s direction, constructed the sumptuous pleasure palace known as the Domus Aurea - the Golden House. According to ancient writers, the Domus Aurea sprawled across three of Rome’s fabled seven hills and enclosed immense landscape gardens, an artificial lake and a 120 foot tall bronze statue representing the emperor himself.

  Not surprisingly, the emperor’s self indulgence rankled with the senatorial elite - rumours began to spread that Nero may have ordered the fire to provide the land needed for the Domus Aurea and that he coolly played on his lyre whilst the city burned. The popular legend of Nero 'fiddling whilst Rome burned' persists even today, despite the fact that it has been refuted by modern scholars as anti-Nero propaganda. Nevertheless, social unrest began to simmer and Nero’s unpopularity steadily increased.
