Exiting the Mamertine prison in the shadow of the imposing Tabularium, close by the execution spot known as the Gemonian Stairs (Stairs of Mourning), we turn our attentions to the greater Roman Forum. Ten hectares of sacred ground which has sustained overbuilding since at least 1,100 BC, when late Bronze Age tribes settled on the Capitoline and Palatine hills, is the focal point of our Imperial Forum Tour. For the greater part of the Common Era, the area has withstood centuries of looting, quarrying, earthquakes and other ruinous activities. We contemplate the beginnings of Rome and her early kings, the defining influence of the Tarquinian dynasty, 500 years of Etruscan rule which flourished during the Roman Iron Age, the rise of the Republic and gradual decline of the Empire during which time ten Emperors met an untimely end by assassination. We take time to engage in open debate and discussion beside the very structures where a diverse societal mix prospered a millennia and more ago; Temple of Julius Caesar, Forum Square, the remains of Basilica Aemilia, Curia (Senate House), Temple of Saturn, the Basilica Giulia, Temple of Vespasian and Titus and the Arches of Septimius Severus and Titus. We also relate the story of the libertine christianisation of the most sacred Temple of Antoninus and Faustina by the Church of San Lorenzo in Miranda.
