IMPERIAL FORUM TOUR
::: Every day of the week. |
Our Imperial Forum Tour ends with an introduction to a number of important structures located outside the Flavian Amphitheatre, situated in what was at one time the Colosseum Valley, between the ancient hills of Celio and Esquilino. Today however, the valley is difficult to discern. Stagnum Neronis, the artificial lake that was to become the crowning glory of Nero's Domus Aurea, occupied the natural basin whereupon the Colosseum was constructed. The first structure we visit is the Arch of Constantine, which by the Renaissance age, was recognised as a symbol of the Ecclesia Triumphans. For this very reason it is a prominent feature on two side wall panels in the Sistine Chapel, depicting the lives of Jesus and Moses. We discuss the history of the Pedestal of the Colossus of Nero and walk around the outer wall of the Colosseum, which has for the most part either collapsed or been pulled down. Entrance arches (gates) bearing Roman numerals can still be seen. Inside the Colosseum at ground level, some original adorning elements remain intact, as do some of the supporting columns which stood beside grandiose arches long since fallen. Fragments of ceiling decoration cut in stucco have also withstood the ravages of time, the most striking being those which embellish alcoves around entrance arches reserved for dignitaries.
